Traveling in the Nether is not like traveling to another biome in the overworld. To access it, you will need to build a Nether Portal, which will transport you to the underworld of Minecraft.  So here’s everything you need to know to build a Nether Portal, including how to craft one. Building a portal to the Nether in Minecraft is a long and potentially arduous task. In survival mode, it’s not as simple as mining obsidian blocks and setting them on fire. It may take hours of preparation, but it’s worth it, once in the Nether you can find Netherite or even find piglets.

How to make a portal to the Nether?

Gather the resources needed to design the portal

To craft a Nether Portal, you must have at least ten blocks of Obsidian and one lighter.

Obtain Obsidian

Obsidian is one of the hardest blocks to obtain in the game. It is created when water hits a lava block. In some generations, you can find some already created underground or you can also make some yourself. If you have a pickaxe Diamond or better, you can mine obsidian. However, even if you don’t have such a tool, you can still create a portal using the method of bucket which we will explain to you further down in the article.

Get a lighter

The Lighter can sometimes be found in dungeons or Nether fortresses. But know that it is much easier to make this tool. To do this you need a piece of flint and an iron ingot. Iron, on the other hand, is found underground. You can mine this metal with at least a stone pickaxe. You will then obtain a block of iron ore, which you can melt in an oven to obtain an ingot. Place the flint and iron in your Craft Table to make a lighter.

Craft a Nether Portal in Minecraft

As said above, a Nether portal requires at least ten blocks of Obsidian as well as Lighter. Here is the step-by-step guide that explains how to make a Nether Portal in Minecraft.

Make the bottom of the Nether Portal

Place two pieces of Obsidian on the ground, with another type of block on each side (Example of cobblestone). Blocks other than obsidian will serve as temporary corners of the portal which you can then remove.

Make the Nether Portal Sides

Above each corner of the portal, place a column of three obsidian blocks. Then at the sum of each column, use two more blocks again to create corners.

Make the top of the Nether Portal

Next, connect the two upper corners using pieces of Obsidian to complete the portal. This should be shaped like a rectangle.

Activate Nether Portal in Minecraft

You can now use your lighter on one of the obsidian blocks to activate the portal.

Craft a Nether Portal with the Bucket Technique

The method of Bucket is another way to create a Nether Portal that doesn’t require mining obsidian. So, you don’t need to find diamonds to make a diamond pickaxe. However, this technique is a little more tedious than the traditional method. Here are the steps you need to follow. Start by making at least two Buckets. Each of them requires three iron ingots.

Then find a water source and also a lava source. Lava is often found underground, but sometimes pools can be found on the surface. It is easiest to create a Nether Portal near your lava source but you can also build it near your base. You’ll just need to do a lot of buckets or be prepared to go back and forth. Now fill one bucket with water and another with lava.

Next, make a wall 5 blocks high and 4 blocks wide with Rock. At the bottom of the wall, make a hole and pour the lava inside. Then pour the water onto the block located just above so that it flows over the lava to make obsidian. Then try to catch the water with your bucket, because otherwise you will have to refill it.

Repeat this same process for the other obsidian portal blocks. However, since you won’t be able to move the blocks after creating them, you must craft each obsidian block in the exact location they need to be within the Nether Portal setting. The frame should have two blocks in the bottom hole, three blocks for the columns on each side (starting with one block above the bottom two blocks), and two blocks at the top. Once the portal frame is built, you can destroy the wall behind it and activate the Nether Portal with a Lighter.

Please note: There will be no hole to pour lava on the side and upper blocks. Therefore, you need to pour the lava directly onto the wall and quickly pour the water onto the block directly above it.

How do you light a Nether portal without a lighter?

  • Fireball: combining charcoal (deposited by the Wither skeleton) with gunpowder (deposited by the Ghasts) and fire powder (made from burning sticks, deposited by the Blazes), you get 3 fire charges that can be clicked with the button right in the obsidian to set fire to the Dutch portal.
  • Wood and lava: By placing wooden blocks or wooden planks next to the portal and lava next to the wood, you will cause the wood to catch fire. The fire will spread and light the gate.
  • Lightning: By placing a lightning rod next to the gate during a storm, you can expect lightning to strike it set the surrounding area on fire, and activate the gate.
