Minecraft has already gained several types of aquatic content throughout its updates and sponges are some of the most useful items among these additions. For the first time in the game, sponges gave players the ability to get rid of large amounts of water blocks in a location quickly, which makes them very useful for construction and underwater exploration. Check out how to get sponges in Minecraft and also how to use them in the game.

Sponges cannot be crafted like other items. You need to find them in Ocean Monuments, the large temples randomly generated in the middle of the ocean. Upon defeating an Elder Guardian, a large, one-eyed aquatic creature that inhabits the temple, the player receives at least one sponge as a reward. The best way to get sponges, however, is to find small “sponge rooms” inside the monuments, usually with openings underneath that hold large amounts of the block.

How to use a sponge in Minecraft

To use a sponge, simply place it near water like a regular pad. It absorbs all adjacent water blocks up to seven blocks away. If there are other water source blocks further away, they will likely retake the area quickly, but if there is a limited amount, a sponge may suck up all the surrounding water. After absorbing water, the item becomes a wet sponge and needs to be placed in an oven to dry and be reused. One tip for drying multiple sponges quickly is to simply place them in the Nether, where the water immediately evaporates.

What are Sponges for in Minecraft

Sponges are one of the easiest ways for players to clean water-filled locations, thanks to their ability to absorb a large amount of water blocks. A sponge can be placed in a water source and will begin to absorb nearby “water blocks.” A single sponge can absorb up to 135 blocks of water before becoming “full.” Players will know if a sponge has water in it if they see water droplets forming from it.

This makes sponges ideal for creating underwater bases and hidden regions beneath the water’s surface, as their water-cleaning potential is unparalleled. It is also possible for players to reuse the same sponge if they place it in a Furnace. Doing so will cause it to dry out and it can be filled with 135 water blocks once again. Players can instantly dry Sponges by dragging them to the Nether and placing them on the ground. Doing so will cause them to “puff up” and then dry out instantly.

Players can achieve a similar effect by placing a sponge inside any “dry” biome in the Minecraft world. This method will take a little longer and the sponges should be dry after a few minutes.
